"Genre Conventions in magazines are completely informed by the social and historical context to which they are made" - Michael Collins Evaluate this statement with reference to Adbusters**. Make reference to Genre Hybridity.

  • Genre conventions are the things that make magazines, magazines.
  • Adbusters does not fit into a genre.
  • We are comparing Adbusters and Woman magazine, which came out in very different time periods, 1964 and 2016.
  • In 1964, women were getting more and more rights, yet things were still a bit sexist etc.
  • In 2016, people are way more equal, and we have had many big big changes, such as 9/11, Donald Trump etc.
  • Social context would be what is happening at the moment, who is becoming president, what wing our countries are etc.
  • Historical is what has happened before to the world at certain times.
  • Agree or disagree, show your opinion.
How to structure an essay?
  • Annotate the question, read it and underline key terms, helping us pick them out easier.
  • Be blunt and ugly, and straight tot he point with your opinion, literally you are right and everyone else is wrong.
  • Decide your opinion, agree or disagree, your gut reaction.
  • We are going to agree with him mainly, but point out a few extra things.
  • Rough plan for the question. Mind map, etc.
  • Put the plan on the answer paper, as you can get marks for your plan, e.g if it includes key terms and good points. Plan...

  • Start writing it...
    • Introduction-use the question to structure it.

          • Abusters (published by Adbusters  media foundation) 1st published in 1989
        • Definition, define genre and state why it is important?
          • Clear conventions tell us the genre.
        • Argument, 
          • "In general Collins is right to list social and historical factors  as inessential to conforming genre, however political ideologies and genre hybridity also play a massive role"

      • Point- The social context the magazine is made in is essential to contructing genre.
      • Evidence- Form the pages that we have studied of the magazine. Central image, stereotypical terrorist, which causes confusion as to why he is there, the magazine lacks cover lines, and information, there is spray paint over the masthead showing the magazine is self vandalising etc.
      • Argument- Steve Neal, Adbusters is very obviously different, it changes itself up so much that it keeps the audience interesting and keeps them reading, it subverts genre conventions to effect attention.
    • Conclusion (if you don't have much time don't worry about writing it)
      • No evidence is needed in the conclusion.
      • Your opinion needs to come through 'I am right' etc.

Anchor Spreadable Butter Advert The groups represented in this advert are the elderly and the young, all within the group of family. The boy monkey is a teenager and the little girl monkey is a pre-teen. The boy monkey looks as though he is a stereotypical teenager as he is wearing a hoodie, which looks like a stereotypical 'dangerous' teenager. The women monkey is old has it seems as though she has stereotypical dementia of an elderly person, and a joke is also made about it. The elderly monkey has a Caribbean accent, portraying different ethnic groups. A stereotype of Jamaican people is that they like food and cooking. Her voice is very soft and makes the advert feel very soft and laid back.  The young boy is inferred to be very sarcastic, the Lexis of him is tat he is informal. Magazine 2- Adbuster Detournement -  Hijacking or re-routing, AKA 'culture jamming'-   The practise of criticising and subverting advertising and consumerism in the mass media, by methods such as producing advertisements parodying those of global brands. The genre is not immediately clear, its hard to tell as each cover and masthead is completely different, and there is no content on the outside, and makes it very hard to know what is in the inside.  Adbusters seems to be a parody, as it is parodying certain popular subjects in the media. There are a lot of parodies of horror films, as they all have many similar conventions, and are very easy to parody. It could be a political genre, as Donald Trump with a literal barcode moustache is on the front cover inferring he is Hitler.
