Pulp- Babies (1994)
- The constant text/graphics/inter titles of what is going on in the video, connote that all music videos are constructed the same for an ideal images, in which these young girls obviously like all of these constructed celebrities judging by the mise-en-scene of the posters on their wall.
- Also makes it clear what is going on in the music video, as music videos are short and it can sometimes be hard to get the meaning across within (an average) four minutes.
- Diegesis of sound is complicated, (Diegesis: in the world of narrative)
- Long shot introduces audience to the band, slowly coming into focus.
- The Mise-en-scene, typical socio-political context, bedroom is working class, as its small and grubby.
- It is getting across a nasty message, of someone watching their friend have sex for the first time, however it is a 'fun' pop song.
- The costume refuses to conform to hegemonic codes, the idea of Pulp is that they aren't cool.
- The use of close ups on the unenthusiastic band members is important as it is subversive to stereotypical music videos, making them 'not cool' yet 'cooler' as they are so abstract.
- The 'coming together' of two previously separate media industries.
- Why is it that music videos exist?
- It may get more money, as it hadn't been done before and its new.
- It is a new form pf entertainment, and it allows the product to target more audience.
- To advertise songs and the band that produced the song.
Synergy
- Where the interconnectedness of media products leads to a result of more of the sum of its parts.
- Examples include merchandising tie-ins, TV shows, etc...

- This can lead to lots of benefits for the producer and the band as it advertises the music.
- Music videos are easily shared as people are always on line, so it makes sense to advertise to audiences through the internet.
- MTV is an American cable channel that only shows music videos, in the 1980's it was massively popular and so it became a massive thing to make music videos.
- By showing the music on TV, gets ore of an audience for both TV and music, as, if you cant find music that good, you'll find it on TV.
MUSIC VIDEO
- Generic music videos are short, roughly 3.30-4.15 minutes.
- Music videos have simple narratives.
- Music videos are edited around a song.
- A music video is the free advert for the song, you don't buy the music video you buy the song.
- you don't get trailers before a music video as it is the advert for the song.
- Music videos are very cut up and over the top, with short scenes.
- They have confusing narrative techniques that would be difficult to be used in films.
- They have fast pasted editing.
- Music videos have a direct mode of address.
- Music videos appeal to a younger audience.
CINEMA
- Generic films are long roughly 1.45-2.30 hours.
- Films have a elaborated narrative.
- A song is edited around a film.
- A film is a product, you pay to go see it and buy it.
- You get trailers before a film.
- Films are less cut up, and scenes are longer and much more detailed.
- They do not have a direct mode of address.
- Films could target to older audience.

Celebrity
- A well known human being by a large amount of people.
- Needs to be WIDELY known.
- They will have interesting bold personalties.
- usually seen as role models (for example she provides her young audience with an ideal figure)
- They have to of done something to be known.
- The attribution of glamorous or notorious status to an individual in the public sphere.
- Celebrities can give life advice to their fans, and help people get through hard times, or know how to dress or know how to have fun, etc. Which conforms to the cultivation theory.
Applause- Lady Gaga- The ways in which celebrity was encoded...
- The close up of the mise-en-scene of the mask of her face could symbolise her secret none famous personality.
- Lady Gaga's lack of costume is bold and daring, as in music videos this is almost normal to be so nude, however if someone is to wear that out in public it would break the hegemonic rules of society, making her a celebrity as it makes her interesting.
- The mise-en-scene of the cauldron that Lady Gaga is coming out of, is her inferring herself as a witch, and that she is a difficult and unpleasant person.
- The shot of her in the shot with other people is showing that she is one with everyone, yet stands out as she is different, especially because of the spotlight on her, however there is no fill lights.
- Lady Gaga has high key lighting on her face, connoting her importance and her celebrity status.
- The mise-en-scene of the bouquet of flowers could infer that the old Lady Gaga is dead and that its time for a new. Or they are symbolic for her fans love and appreciation for her.

- She was always positioned in the centre of the scene.
Metanarrative
- Also known as the grand narrative, this refers to an overarching narrative or system of beliefs that helps us to make sense of the world.
- Marxist's believe that the ruling class have a power over the subjected class, (higher and lower class) and believe that life is a struggle for the subjected class as the ruling class has more power.
- Religion takes a different role in different peoples life's, as religious people have a whole other perspective of life.
