EXAM STRUCTURE

"Genre Conventions in magazines are completely informed by the social and historical context to which they are made" - Michael Collins Evaluate this statement with reference to Adbusters**. Make reference to Genre Hybridity. Genre conventions are the things that make magazines, magazines. Adbusters does not fit into a genre. We are comparing Adbusters and Woman magazine, which came out in very different time periods, 1964 and 2016. In 1964, women were getting more and more rights, yet things were still a bit sexist etc. In 2016, people are way more equal, and we have had many big big changes, such as 9/11, Donald Trump etc. Social context would be what is happening at the moment, who is becoming president, what wing our countries are etc. Historical is what has happened before to the world at certain times. Agree or disagree, show your opinion. How to structure an essay? Annotate the question, read it and underline key terms, helping us pick them out easier. ...

Magazine 2 Lesson 1

Magazine 2- Adbuster Detournement -  Hijacking or re-routing, AKA 'culture jamming'-   The practise of criticising and subverting advertising and consumerism in the mass media, by methods such as producing advertisements parodying those of global brands. The genre is not immediately clear, its hard to tell as each cover and masthead is completely different, and there is no content on the outside, and makes it very hard to know what is in the inside.  Adbusters seems to be a parody, as it is parodying certain popular subjects in the media. There are a lot of parodies of horror films, as they all have many similar conventions, and are very easy to parody. It could be a political genre, as Donald Trump with a literal barcode moustache is on the front cover inferring he is Hitler. It seems very informal, as it has an enormous central image, and each masthead is different, there is no structure on the front cover. they may have done this as it ...

Woman Magazine

To What extent are Woman and Adbusters examples of specialised and institutionalised media productions? Make reference to their distribution and circulation IPC-  International Publishing Corporation Ltd Is the publisher a large/ mainstream organisation or an independent publisher? Mainstream  Is the publisher part of a media conglomerate? Time Inc What other products (magazines or other media products) does the organisation produce? They have various other magazines, such as one dedicated to breakfast food. How is this significant for the magazine? An example of how a magazine is specialised, as it targets a specific audiences. Brand identity is relied on institutions, and target specific audience through their own ways and ideologies. A magazine is expected to be kept slightly longer than a newspaper, that you would most likely throw out in a day If people didn't buy a magazine, it would just be stopped if it was independent. Key Theory 12-...

Key Theory 9- Feminist Theory- Bell Hooks Feminism is a struggle to end patriarchal hegemony and the domination of women Feminism is not a lifestyle choice: it is a political commitment Race, classes and gender all determine the extent to which individuals are exploited and oppressed. This theory thinks about both men and women, and how they can both be feminists, and how it affects them both. Female Stereotypes- Old Advertisement Beer Advert She's crying and emotional as she couldn't succeed at the one thing she was meant to do. She is wearing a skirt, a typical stereotype, and a hegemonic rule, that the women is wearing the skirt and the man is wearing the 'pants'. That women are useless and beer is better. She has the mans pocket hanky and is crying into it, and needs the man to cheer her up. It is saying that men is more of the beer drinker. A positive viewing of it is that they can share the beer, and have some together, and she wont have to co...

What is the difference between component one and component two? Media language Representation Audience  Media industries In component two your point of view and opinion should come across and be shared. There is a historical context to the magazines we cover. For component two you kind of need to make up the question yourself.  You do not need to do a balanced argument. Semiotic codes Hermetic Symbolic Proairetic  Claud Levi Strauss   Binary Opposition Quite a lot of magazines have a glossy cover unlike a newspaper or tabloid, most likely to make the magazine have much more quality, unlike a newspaper which you would throw away after reading. But not every magazine has a glossy cover. Magazines have many more pages, which is why they are slightly more money. Magazine are much more about the look and the design. The style of the magazine varies a lot from edition to edition Some magazines come with free gifts (PUGS) or free samples. Maga...

Revising the Industries Theories

Revising the Industries Theories Power and media industries- Curran and Seaton The media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and domination.  Regulation- Sonia Livingstone and Peter Lunt Transformations in the productions, distribution and marketing of digital media, have placed traditional approaches to media restrictions at risk. Cultural Industries- David Hesmondhalgh Companies try to minimise risk and maximise audiences through vertical and horizontal integration. Cultural Capital It is the value of culture, the cultural resources of an individual.  Cultural capital is a form of hegemony. How does The Daily Mirror speak  to its working class audience? Housestyle of text is sans-serif, which infers that it is informal, and is based on the working class target audience. Its mode of address is direct, and it makes the working class feel far more important, and as though they are being in...
